Microphlebectomy: The Revolutionary Treatment for Varicose Veins

You don’t have to live with unbearable leg pain anymore. Microphlembectomy is one of the many minimally invasive procedures available to treat and resolve varicose veins.

Varicose veins are a common condition affecting up to 3 in 10 adults. Your legs and calves work against gravity, transferring blood from your feet to your heart. Yet, sometimes, veins don’t function as they should.

Microphlembectomy offers fast healing and fabulous aesthetic results.

Varicose Veins

What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins appear raised, twisted, blue, and itchy or painful. These veins develop when the tiny valves in your blood vessels don’t work correctly, causing blood from the lower extremities to reverse flow and pool. While varicose veins are usually genetically linked, other factors increase your risk of developing them, including:

  • Obesity
  • Prolonged standing or sitting
  • Aging
  • Pregnancy
  • Family history of the condition
  • Prior leg injury, including a minor one like hitting your leg on a table
  • Hormonal changes (e.g., puberty, birth control pills, and menopause)

This medical condition is typically not considered serious. However, if ignored, varicose veins can become serious health problems, with symptoms like debilitating ulcers and blood clots.

What is Microphlebectomy?

Microphlebectomy is a safe and effective treatment to remove medium to large varicose veins through tiny, precise incisions that are nearly undetectable. This outpatient procedure is minimally invasive, performed in the office, and does not require general anesthesia.

Here is what to expect:

  • This treatment is performed in the office at our Fort Wayne location.
  • The procedure takes 15 to 20 minutes, and patients are numbed using local anesthesia.
  • Dr. Marcus Jimenez will complete a series of small incisions that don’t require sutures.
  • You’ll experience minimal discomfort.

Most patients are back to work within one to two days. You should avoid strenuous activities for 1-2 weeks after your procedure. Pro tip: wear compression stockings for several days to aid in your recovery.

This treatment requires no sutures, only a small bandage covering the incision.

How to Prepare for a Microphlebectomy

This procedure doesn’t require much preparation. With these tips, you’ll be surprised by how smoothly your microphlebectomy goes:

  • Drink plenty of water in the week leading up to your procedure.
  • Avoid applying lotions or oils to your skin after showering.
  • Wear comfortable and loose clothing to your appointment.
  • Bring a comfortable pair of walking shoes (you’ll be required to walk roughly 30 minutes after your procedure).
  • Have your compression socks on hand.

Fortunately, microphlembectomy offers fast healing and fabulous aesthetic results. This treatment requires no sutures, only a small bandage covering the incision.

How Do I Know If Microphlebectomy Is Right for Me?

Microphlembectomy is ideal for patients with veins near the skin’s surface. While this treatment offers fast relief, there are other reasons your doctor will suggest this procedure, including:

  • If your vein is superficial (situated just beneath your skin), a microphlembectomy is the quickest treatment for removing varicose veins.
  • If your veins are visibly large, swollen, protruding, or unsightly, a microphlembectomy achieves quicker aesthetic results.
  • Veins that are constantly itchy, painful, or generally uncomfortable respond better to this treatment because it offers immediate relief.
  • If you didn’t respond fully to a previous vein treatment, your specialist might recommend a microphlembectomy.

Dr. Jimenez may advise you to have a microphlebectomy if the severity of your veins increases your risk of further complications, including leg swelling, open wounds, vein bleeding, or blood clots.
