Varicose Veins

How to Prepare for Varicose Vein Treatment and Aftercare

Are you ready to eliminate varicose veins and their symptoms once and for all? Now is the best time to explore varicose vein treatment options and understand what to expect throughout the process. This comprehensive guide provides detailed information from pre-procedure preparations to post-procedure care so you can have healthy, beautiful legs you want to show off.

Whether you have chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) or are simply tired of how varicose veins make you look or feel, Indiana Vein & Laser Center is here for you.

Determining which treatment is best depends on the severity of vein disease, the symptoms you’re experiencing, and whether they are cosmetic or medical.

Chronic Venous Insufficiency and Venous Reflux

CVI and venous reflux occur when venous valves don’t function adequately, leading to the reversal of blood flow in the legs when standing or sitting. This can cause swelling, spider veins, varicose veins, poor circulation, and a feeling of achiness, itchiness, or heaviness.

Treatment for this condition includes at-home care and surgical options, such as endovenous laser ablation, microphlebectomy, and sclerotherapy for reticular or smaller varicose veins.

What Are My Varicose Vein Treatment Options?

Determining which treatment is best depends on the severity of vein disease, the symptoms you’re experiencing, and whether they are cosmetic or medical. There are three primary treatment options for varicose veins that we offer at IVLC.

Endovenous Laser Treatment

Endovenous laser treatment is a minimally invasive, effective, in-office procedure that often takes less than an hour to complete. This treatment is used in place of traditional vein stripping—an extensive, painful, and invasive surgery that requires a hospital stay.

Patients who have developed varicose veins are eligible for a procedure known as microphlebectomy to remove unwanted veins.

Using local anesthesia, Dr. Jimenez will enter the greater saphenous vein through a catheter and thread a laser filament under ultrasound guidance. Once the laser is in place and the area around the vein is anesthetized, pulses of laser energy are emitted into the vein. This causes the vein to close and scar, effectively rerouting blood to healthy veins and eliminating unpleasant symptoms associated with varicose veins and CVI.

Microphlebectomy

Patients who have developed varicose veins are eligible for a procedure known as microphlebectomy to remove unwanted veins.

Before the procedure begins, local anesthesia will be applied to the treatment areas. Once the area is numb, tiny incisions will be made along the varicose vein. The affected vein is then removed in small sections, and scarring is minimal.

Results from microphlebectomy are immediate. Once your procedure is complete, you will have a compression hose placed on the treated leg and be given post-op instructions. Most patients walk out of the office with full leg strength and no downtime.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is used both cosmetically and, in some cases, medically to eliminate smaller varicose veins and larger spider veins, known as reticular veins.

This treatment option works by injecting a sclerosing agent into the affected vein, causing it to collapse and be reabsorbed by the body over time. Once the unhealthy vein is closed, blood will be re-routed to healthier veins. Patients may require more than one session to achieve the desired results.

We recommend wearing compression stockings for at least one week post-procedure for best results.
