What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are a sign of venous insufficiency, which happens when your leg veins become damaged. As a result, the veins can’t manage blood flow, making it more difficult for the blood in your legs to return to your heart. 

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, varicose veins can occur anywhere in the body but are most common in the legs and are typically caused by increased blood pressure in veins. Symptoms from this condition may include: 

  • Color changes in the skin
  • Leg sores
  • Rash
  • Sensations in the legs, such as a heavy feeling, burning, or aching

  1. Stay as cool as possible. Find a shaded area or use a portable fan if you plan to be outside for long periods. 
  2. Wear sunscreen when outside. Regardless of vascular issues, you should wear sunscreen every time you are outdoors. This helps prevent the rays from increasing the damage to your skin and varicose veins. 
  3. Stay hydrated. When you sweat, you lose water, causing dehydration. While water is always best, coconut water is a refreshing alternative, full of electrolytes and minerals.
  4. Stimulate circulation. Exercising, elevating your feet, and wearing compression stockings are all ways to improve circulation and manage your varicose veins in the summer. 
  5. Consider your clothing. Wear loose clothing like a maxi dress, a long skirt, or loose shorts to keep the blood flowing properly. Unnecessarily tight clothing will constrict your circulation and worsen your symptoms.
